Bilirubin is a waste product mainly produced by the normal breakdown of heme, a component of hemoglobin found in red blood cells (RBCs). The liver processes bilirubin and excretes it. Conjugated bilirubin (also called direct bilirubin) is the form of bilirubin which has been conjugated with glucoronic acid and is excreted in the bile. This test measures levels of conjugated bilirubin in the blood.
