What are basophils?
Basophils are a type of white blood cell (WBC) produced in the bone marrow and released into the blood as required. They play a key role in the body’s immune response. This test is included in Nordic Wellth’s Complete Blood Count (CBC) test.
Why test basophils?
Basophils are a type of white blood cell (WBC) produced in the bone marrow and released into the blood as required. They play a key role in the body’s immune response. Testing basophils is important for several reasons. It helps you discover risk factors for lifestyle diseases in time to take action. A white blood cell (WBC) differential, which includes basophils, is often part of a routine check when you have diverse symptoms. Additionally, monitoring basophil levels can help track changes in your blood values as you make lifestyle changes or undergo treatments.
What do the results mean?
High and low values can each have many causes ranging from inflammation to kidney problems and should be investigated by a doctor.
What causes elevated basophils?
Elevated basophils can be caused by several inflammatory conditions including dermatitis, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis. Recent infections and hormone imbalances can also elevate basophils.
Symptoms of elevated basophils
High levels of basophils, known as basophilia, can cause various symptoms, including persistent fatigue, itching, skin rashes, and allergic reactions like hives and swelling. You might also experience joint pain from chronic inflammation. More serious health conditions can cause unexplained weight loss, night sweats, and frequent infections. If you notice these symptoms, it's important to consult a doctor for evaluation and treatment.
What causes low basophils?
There are many reasons for low basophils (basopenia). These include allergies, infections, hypersensitivity reactions, pregnancy, hyperthyroidism, stress, and the use of corticosteroid medications.
Symptoms of low basophils
Low levels of basophils, known as basopenia, are rare and typically do not cause specific symptoms on their own. However, they can be associated with underlying conditions or factors that may lead to symptoms such as frequent or severe infections due to a weakened immune system, more severe allergic reactions, persistent fatigue, and symptoms of chronic stress. Additionally, conditions like hyperthyroidism, which presents with weight loss, rapid heartbeat, and anxiety, can also result in low basophil levels. If you have concerns about low basophil levels or experience these symptoms, it’s important to consult a doctor for proper evaluation and treatment.
